Harris County Department of Education’s Head Start division is now hiring for campus managers, teachers, teacher aides, family services providers and cooks!
Make a difference in a child’s life, setting the foundation for success with the community’s youngest learners by supporting the development of infants, toddlers and preschoolers.
HCDE runs five infant and toddler Early Head Start programs and 12 Headstart preschools in the eastern portion of Harris County. Our Early Head Start programs serve students ages 6 months to 36 months old and our Head Start preschools serve students ages 3-5.
Head Start campus managers lead individual centers, managing staff, operations and instruction for Harris County’s youngest learners. They work 230 days a year with time off for Thanksgiving week, Winter Break, Spring Break and during the summer.
Head Start teachers and teaching assistants work a typical school calendar (Early Head Start teachers work throughout the year), starting in early August and ending in late May with days off for Thanksgiving week, the Winter Break, Spring Break and the month of June.
Family Services Providers work 230 days a year, with time off for Thanksgiving week, Winter Break, Spring Break and during the summer.
Cooks work either 190 or 218 days a year, with time off for Thanksgiving week, Winter Break, Spring Break and varied time during the summer depending upon the work calendar.

Family Services Provider
Help recruit and enroll students into Head Start and Early Head Start programs.
Provide case management to parents for services.
Engage parents and the community in programs and activities.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in social work, human services, counseling, or related field
Or
Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field with a credential/certificate in social work, human services, family services, counseling or related field
Or
Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field with case management experience and obtain a family development credential within 18-months of hire.
AND
Strong verbal and written communication skills
SALARY RANGE: $39,831 – $48,576
(Depending upon credentials and experience.)
EARLY HEAD START/HEAD START
TEACHER
Work with children (infants and toddlers to age 5) in a classroom setting, providing instruction for growth in intellectual, emotional, physical and social development.
Qualifications
All Teachers:
Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or related field with at least 18 credit hours in early childhood education OR
Bachelor’s degree with certification in early childhood with a minimum of 2 years teaching experience in prekindergarten or kindergarten OR
Associate degree in early childhood education or related field with at least 18 credit hours in early childhood education AND
Must meet TEA and child care licensing background check requirements
Early Head Start Teachers:
Infant toddler Child Development Associate* (CDA) credential OR
Enrolled in a program with coursework completed within 12 months of hire
*HCDE will pay for eligible candidates to obtain their CDA within their first year of employment.
$17.48 – $31.97 PER HOUR

HEAD START
Teacher Assistant
Assist teachers in preparation, management and delivery of classroom instruction and activities while engaging with infants and toddlers or preschool children.
Qualifications
High school diploma/GED
Or
Associate degree in early childhood education or Related Field
Or
Preschool Child Development Associate (CDA) credential*
Or
Enrolled in a preschool Child Development Associate (CDA) credential program to be completed within 12 months of hire
*HCDE will pay for eligible candidates to obtain their CDA within their first year of employment.
SALARY RANGE: $24,800 – $30,240
(Depending upon credentials and experience.)
Cook
Create and serve nutritionally sound meals for Early Head Start and Head Start students according to established menus and guidelines.
Use software to order supplies and maintain inventory of goods.
Keep kitchen and associated cooking spaces clean and sanitary.
Qualifications
High school diploma/GED
And
Basic English speaking and writing
And
Experience cooking for large groups
And
Ability to work on a computer
$15.50 – $18.90 PER HOUR
(Depending upon credentials and experience.)
Campus Manager
Direct and supervise all aspects of the daily operations of the Head Start campus.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in early childhood education, child development or related field
And
Must complete training and obtain certification in Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) and recertify annually
And
Must demonstrate proficiency annually in the child screening and assessment tools
And
Advanced knowledge of early childhood education and child development best practices as identified by the National Association for the Education of Young Children
And
Ability to mentor teaching teams through identified Head Start mentor practices
And
Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
And
Excellent problem-solving skills
SALARY RANGE: $56,966 – $69,472
